William Panton's apprenticeship began in 1765,
with John Gordon and Company of Charleston, where he served as a clerk
until 1772. In 1772, Gordon appointed Thomas Netherclift and
William Panton his attorneys to manage his mercantile business and supervision
of the operation of Godron's plantation and his other interests.
"The other partners in Panton, Leslie
and Company ----- Charles McLatchy and William Panton ---made their
homes in the Floridas, although Panton did spend aboaut six months in Nassau,
september 1784 to March 1785, where he purchased a home."
"By April 1785, Panton had moved
to Penscola, here he lived for the next fifteen years. Panton remained
a bachelor."
